The process

How a Tank Alarm installation works

From booking to working alarm — a full walkthrough of what happens, when, and why.

The installation process, step by step

01

Book online

Fill in our booking form with your details, tank type, and preferred timing. A £50 deposit secures your slot — applied against the total price. You'll receive a confirmation email within a few hours.

02

Pre-installation call

We'll call you within 24 hours to discuss your specific setup: tank location, access, and any unusual features. This call ensures we arrive fully prepared and that installation is smooth.

03

Installation day

Our team arrives at the agreed time with all equipment. We assess the final routing on-site, then install the sensor, route the cabling, mount the solar panel, and position the external siren for maximum deterrence. Most installs are complete within 1.5–2.5 hours.

04

Testing and commissioning

Before we leave, we run full system tests: triggering the alarm, confirming the siren sounds correctly, testing the tamper detection, and verifying the fob range from the property boundary. Nothing is left untested.

05

Handover and walkthrough

We walk you through the system: how to arm and disarm it, what to do when your oil is delivered, what the different alarm states mean. You'll also receive a laminated quick-reference card for your tank and a digital copy of your warranty.

Sensor installation

Three sensor options — we pick the right one for your tank

Depending on your tank type and setup, we'll use whichever sensor method is cleanest and most reliable for you. We never drill into the tank wall or modify the outlet — only the top surface where required, which is standard practice.

32mm drill method

A 32mm hole is drilled in the tank top (not the tank wall) and the sensor probe is inserted. Clean, flush-mounted finish. Our most common installation.

Existing access point

Where your tank already has a spare access port (common on bunded tanks), we route the sensor through it with no additional drilling required.

No-drill radar sensor

A non-contact radar sensor mounts externally and reads the level through the tank wall. Ideal for tanks where drilling isn't possible or preferred.

What's installed

System components explained

Every component is selected for reliability, weatherproofing, and ease of use in a rural property context.

Fuel level sensor

Monitors your tank's fuel level continuously. Detects theft instantly the moment oil begins to drop unexpectedly — the first sign of any theft attempt. Weatherproof housing, tamper-alarmed. Smart loss detection — The system only triggers on unexpected fuel loss. When your tank is being filled by a delivery, the rising level is recognised as legitimate. No need to disarm for deliveries, no false alarms.

Alarm unit

110dB weatherproof siren housed inside the alarm unit for maximum tamper resistance, with vented output for full audibility. Activates within 1 second of a trigger event.

Key fob

Dedicated RF fob for arming and disarming. No Wi-Fi, no app, no mobile signal required. Range of 100–200 metres line of sight, with extended antenna for reliable rural coverage.

Control unit

The brain of the system. Processes sensor inputs, manages alarm state, controls the siren, and communicates with the fob. Housed in a weatherproof enclosure.

Tamper detection

Any attempt to remove or bypass the sensor triggers the alarm immediately — making disabling the system as dangerous as the theft attempt itself.

Solar panel + battery

A 20W solar panel keeps the LiFePO4 battery topped up year-round from ambient daylight. No mains electricity needed — the battery runs for weeks without solar input, months under normal UK conditions.

Installation questions

Do I need to be home during the installation?

Yes — we need access to the property and tank, and we'll need someone to be present for the handover walkthrough at the end.

What if my tank is in a difficult location?

We've installed in all sorts of configurations. Let us know your setup when booking and we'll confirm if any adaptations are needed.

Do you need a power supply?

No. Tank Alarm runs entirely on solar power with a long-life LiFePO4 battery backup. No mains electricity is needed — the system works even in areas without an accessible socket nearby.

Can the alarm be moved if we change our tank?

Yes. The sensor and system are designed to be removable. We'd reinstall on the new tank at our standard call-out rate.
